Homework.

Juliet would not have been forced to take such drastic action if she simply communicated with her family. Ultimately, Juliet, her mother and her father needed to sit down and have a nice long talk

Juliet would't have had to take such drastic actions if she just spoke to her parents. If she told her parents she had feelings for Romeo and did not want to marry Paris, chances are Juliet would still be alive, she might have been on the streets but she would be alive and with Romeo. Seeing as Juliet did not talk to her parents about this whole ordeal they were going to continue doing what they thought was best for her. Letting Paris marry her would have been a good move for Juliet and the Capulets and as Juliet did not say she didn't want to get married to him they proceeded with their own plans.
Instead of sneaking behind her parents backs and getting the sleeping potion from friar Lawrence could have made it so much easier for everyone, there wouldn't have been a massive communication problem and Juliet could have just spent the rest of her life with Romeo.
Maybe if Juliet just told her parents straight up that she loved Romeo, he parents would have understood and allowed it, putting aside their rivalry and and just let them be happy, instead of what Juliet's father suggested which was to throw Juliet out on the street.A bit of communication and understanding of what everyone was going through could have saved their lives.

The sun, the moon, the stars..

Imagery helps the audience feel and imagine what is going on the the text. Throughout the play, there are references to the sky. The main idea of Romeo and Juliet being 'star-crossed' lovers means that they were brought together by the stars, in other words their star signs mean't that they would be a match.
At the beginning of the play, Romeo is deeply depressed because of Rosaline, and he is found wandering the night by himself. He is introduced into the play as a dark person. This all changed when he meets "Juliet..the sun" ( scene 2 acts 2). Juliet brings him out of the dark and into the light, she is his reason to be happy. He also says that "O! she doth teach the torches to burn bright" (act 1 scene 5), Juliet has taught him that the world is not a dark place and the only way he will move on from such a state of depression.
The references to the sky show the audience that Romeo is a very spiritual being and he is deeply influenced by his heart. His feelings take over the logic of the whole idea, in this case, she doesn't seem to think of what would happen if he marries a girl that he just met the day before. The sun burns bright like Romeos passion, and relating the couple to the sky was a very good way that Shakespeare engages the reader.
"The brightness of her cheek would shame those stars, as daylight doth a lamp; her eyes in heaven”(II, ii, 19-20) Romeo means that the brightness of her cheeks would outshine the stars the way the sun outshines a lamp. If her eyes were in the night sky, they would shine so brightly through space that birds would start singing, thinking her light was the light of day.
Romeo places juliet on such a high pedestal, and relates her to the sky yet again, this time saying that her beauty is greater than that of the sky. She illuminates the dark and everyone and everything around her is affected.

Respect your elders !

As Romeo and Juliet progresses, the audience is positioned to see that in the Capulet household respect for the family elders is paramount.

A few examples of where the respect of elders in the Capulet house become paramount is where Juliet makes up her own mind about marriage and who she wants to be with. Mr and Mrs Capulet have already chosen Paris as a suitable husband and as soon as they think Juliet is ready to wed it will be to him. Although, Juliet goes behind her parents back with the help of the Nurse and marries Romeo instead. Another example would be when Romeo and his friends arrive at the Capulet party, Thybalt immediately wants to fight them as they are Montagues and when Mr Capulet tells him to leave it he does not listen. Questioning his authority and lack of respect shows that the Capulet household does not position their elders word above their own thoughts and beliefs.

Romeo is an impulsive character and his actions are influenced by his emotions.

Romeo Montague is a character whose emotions greatly influence the way he acts and talks. He is either deeply depressed or love struck. His emotions are often impulsive and the reason he feels the way he does isn't justified. For example the very sight of Juliet pulled him out of his deep depression and into a strong feeling of love. The girl he has just met has now become the reason he was put on the Earth and he does not hesitate to propose and get married. It is very clear that Romeo is impatient when it seems he knows how he feels about somebody, and without much though he lets his emotions control him. Taking it slow isn't something that this couple is good at.

Character Profiles

Romeo: A Montague. He meets the daughter of his family's enemy and falls madly in love with her, forgetting his previous love for a girl named Rosaline. He is quick to action and slow to reasoning, which may seal his fate. He marries Juliet but is provoked into a fight and kills her cousin Tybalt. He is exiled to Mantua. He kills himself in Juliet's tomb when he believes her to be dead.

Juliet: A Capulet. She finds strength in her love for Romeo and hatches a plan with the Friar to help her escape her planned marriage to Paris for the arms of her husband, Romeo. When she awakens from her induced sleep, she finds Romeo dead in her family vault. She refuses to be parted from her lover and stabs herself with his dagger. Her death is the last installment in the tragic penalty paid for the inability of the Capulets and Montagues to live in peace.

Tybalt: Cousin to Juliet. He is referred to as the Prince of Cats as he is a skillful fencer and kills all the mice he encounters. Tybalt is unwilling to tolerate Romeo's presence at the Capulet party and seeks revenge. When he finally meets Romeo in the street, Romeo refuses to fight. Tybalt does not know Romeo is now his kinsman. Tybalt instead fights Mercutio and takes a cheap shot under Romeo's arm when he tries to break up the fight. Romeo finally fights Tybalt to avenge Mercutio. Tybalt is killed by Romeo, which causes Romeo's banishment.

Homework task

Dear Diary,
I'm don't know what to do. My parents want me to break up with my boyfriend even though I know he is the one. I've never felt this way about anyone before and because my parents don't know anything about him or what he has been through they are threatening to disown me for liking him. I bet they never had anyone doing this to them when my parents started dating, they know im smart enough to make up my own mind and make the right decision. He is this nicest boy I have ever met and he treats me like a princess, I hardly see what is wrong with that.

How are women represented in Kanye West’s ‘Gold Digger’?

The music video and lyrics to Kanye West’s ‘Gold Digger’ represents women in a very objective way. The music video shows numerous women in lingerie whilst Kanye himself is dressed in normal clothing. These girls are posing infront of magazine covers in flirtatious ways and covered in makeup. Now I ain't sayin' she a gold digger (When I'm in need)
But she ain't messin' wit no broke, broke (She steal me money)
The lyrics represent women as financially dependent on men and will go out and spend money on liposuction instead of insurance.
18 years, 18 years
She got one of yo' kids, got you for 18 years
I know somebody payin' child support for one of his kids
'Cause when she leave yo' ass she gon' leave with half
18 years, 18 years
And on her 18th birthday, he found out it wasn't his?
Again, these lyrics show women in a negative way. The lyrics are saying that us women sleep around and have children with numerous people. Marriage isn’t something we care about and we divorce our husbands for the child support money and half of the bank account. The child in the music video is dressed up as a devil. ‘The spawn of Satan’ is the meaning behind this, again, women are the negative in this scenario.
She walkin' around lookin' like Michael with ya money
These lyrics are about the amount of plastic surgery women get done in order to look attractive to the opposite sex. These lyrics suggest that our number one priority should be self maintenance and how we act in front of men. The girls that are getting all the attention are the ones half naked on magazine covers and this is how women are portrayed in the media. Anyone above this standard receive no mention, all you hear about are the women with the prettiest faces and richest husbands.

Show Don’t Tell

1: The hero was strong and handsome. He was admired by the townspeople. He was brave and wished to help other people in need.
Winchester was as strong as the Greek Gods and twice as handsome. Everywhere he went he could feel the men’s jealous eyes stabbing at hi, while the women swooned at his charms. Nothing could scare him and he longed for the taste of danger. Protecting his town was not only his job but his passion.
2: The wizard was ugly and evil. The people of the town were terrified of him. He enjoyed threatening them, especially the children. He was cruel and greedy.
Up in his castle, he could watch the people in town hide. They truly were terrified of the wizard and this pleased him. The wizard enjoyed threatening and scaring the people in the town, especially the helpless children. He considered himself as a superior above them all and forced them to cure his greed with their belongings in exchange for his protection; after all, with one simple flick of his wand he could destroy the entire town.
3: The Knight was arrogant and greedy. He did not want to help others. He only wanted to be viewed as the most handsome and talented warrior in the land.

Although the knight fulfilled his duties as a brave and ruthless warrior, it was always against his will. This knight did not enjoy his job and he never did it for the respect for his town. This knight was a greedy as a pig and twice as arrogant. His good looks were the only thing going for him and it was the only thing he was concerned about.

4:The peasants were kind and helpful. They were hard working and honest people. They were scared to drawing the attention of the wizard.

Down in the city the peasants could feel the evil wizard staring down upon them. Their hard work and kindness did not please him and in no way did the wizard respect them. They prided themselves on their honesty and were helpful to others even though it was them that needed the most help.

5:The land was beautiful, but harsh. The town was safe from the elements, but outside could be dangerous if one did not take precautions.

Away from the dangerous outside world, the city was full of protection. The landscape was safe from the elements and one could find its natural beauty soothing and peaceful. Although the land could be harsh it was home and that was the most important thing.

Home Town Activity

Vancouver us a city filled with true beauty. It is fresh and calm, even the storm clouds could put you at ease. The morning, grass would be covered in a light dew and the crisp smell of pine tress hanging in the air. On a winters day, waking up to the sound of birds calling and to find a sprinkling of fresh snow, and running outside meant getting attacked by the stabbing cold. By day, women would flock to the nearest Starbucks and catch up on the latest gossip while the men crossed the bridge into the city to work. By nightfall, the soft glow from the stars reflected upon the snow would act as your glow light outside of your window and could always put you to sleep in calm state.
The people of Vancouver are always welcoming and would seldom keep to themselves. Meeting your friends on the mountains for a few hours of snowboarding was always a fun way to end the day, and the view overlooking the harbour and city would make the cold bearable. After a long day on the slopes, walking back to the cabin heated by a log fire, drinking hot chocolate and eating french fries is just one of the many memorable moments I've had in Vancouver. I would like to go back one day to visit my friends and relive some of these memories. Although, for the time being, I LOVE living on the Gold Coast. :)

To kill a mockingbird websearch

Part A

Hi Judy
How are you? Do you have any news? Sorry I have taken so long to reply to you least message, with it being the depression and all. I guess I just haven’t had much time. Yeah my family is going good, and yours? My father is now a gainfully employed lawyer and he looks after how we spend out money as he is the one who earned it, which I guess is fair. Everyone one up here as a maid or two as well. My mum stays at home and we have a cook and nurse to help her out. We also have a gardener that looks after our flowers and grass. We own our own land and we bring in income fro out crops, our family is doing quite well now as we don’t have to pay much tax on our land either.
I enjoy being where I live, I have a lot to do. I usually play jump rope or play with jacks; I am in scouts and love playing tackle football with my best friend. I even built a fort with him; we have a lot of fun. For Christmas my mum got me a few dolls, but I like what all my guy friends got, toy trains and trucks, we used my dolls to reenact a mugging!
It can be hard to play with them sometime though; mum gets mad at me for getting my clothes dirty. She told us that we could never wear blue jeans as they were too tacky and we could never walk around barefoot. Also we were told we could never fight like boys, although that never stopped me hitting a few of them. We are told to not raise our voices and to never say “shut up”, we must always have correct grammar. In the afternoons we got dressed up to go to town or the park, but for some reason we were never allowed to talk to the other black children there. We always have to look our best, my dad just bought me and my sister handmade dresses from New York just the other day, they’re very pretty, I love wearing them.
My friends are mostly boys, I’ve never seen why this was a problem but mum thinks I should be spending more time making girl friends and going to tea parties or like she says “being a lady” .

Anyways, that’s all I can think of telling you
I hope to see you soon,
Makede.

To Whom It May Concern
I was run over by the truth one day.
Ever since the accident I've walked this way
So stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.

Heard the alarm clock screaming with pain,
Couldn't find myself so I went back to sleep again
So fill my ears with silver
Stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.

Every time I shut my eyes all I see is flames.
Made a marble phone book and I carved out all the names
So coat my eyes with butter
Fill my ears with silver
Stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.

I smell something burning, hope it's just my brains.
They're only dropping peppermints and daisy-chains
So stuff my nose with garlic
Coat my eyes with butter
Fill my ears with silver
Stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.

Where were you at the time of the crime?
Down by the Cenotaph drinking slime
So chain my tongue with whisky
Stuff my nose with garlic
Coat my eyes with butter
Fill my ears with silver
Stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.

You put your bombers in, you put your conscience out,
You take the human being and you twist it all about
So scrub my skin with women
Chain my tongue with whisky
Stuff my nose with garlic
Coat my eyes with butter
Fill my ears with silver
Stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.

Questions

1: When i read this poem I feel sad, like I was in this mans shoes. How he describes what he is feeling comes across as very clear and the poem makes me feel almost guilty for letting him go to war and putting him through this, even though I had nothing to do with it. The man is suffering even after the war and he can't get rid of the images and memories and it makes me feel sorry for him.
2:The poem is about a man who fought in the Vietnam war and he can't get the images, smells, feelings and memories out of his head.As the song goes on another element is added to the poem.In the last stanza there are the senses and how he tries to explain how he could get rid of them. Every one of the senses is there and this shows how much the war has affected him.
3: scrub my skin
Chain my tongue
Stuff my nose
Coat my eyes
Fill my ears
Stick my legs
These are descriptive words used in the poem. They are effective because scrub, chain, stuff, coat, fill and stick are not particularly nice words and how he is feeling isn't nice at all. This adds a certain dark mood to the poem.
4:I think the poet tried to achieve by writing this poem was understanding, by the people who were not involved in the war.'Tell me lies about Vietnam' is how he expresses that the war in Vietnam was horrific and tragic and you would have to lie to say anything else. The descriptive words used in the poem help get across to the reader how this man is feeling and I when I read the poem I thought it came across very well as I could see what lengths he would have to go to in order to forget everything he went through.
5: I smell something burning, hope it's just my brains.
They're only dropping peppermints and daisy-chains
So stuff my nose with garlic
I chose these lines because they created imagery for me.The poet is trying to say that he would rather be going crazy than believe what was really going on.He tried to make the situation better by imaging he was somewhere else, somewhere were only peppermints and daisy chains were falling. He chose these words because they are nice smelling and what he was smelling that was burning was probably bodies. In order to get rid of the smell you would have to stuff your nose with garlic.
6: The first two lines in each stanza rhyme.
7: This adds to the overall effect of the poem by using rhyming words that are easy to remember, such as day-way,crime-slime etc. Personally, I find rhyming poems easier to remember and I don't find them as difficult to read and then I can focus more :D
8:I haven't heard this poem before but I really liked it and that is why I have chosen to analyse it.
9:I liked this poem because I really enjoyed reading about what he had to do to get rid of the memories of war.I thought it was interesting and even though he wouldn't actually do it it helped me understand how extreme the situation was. This helped me fell like I could relate to the story more without actually being the poet.
10: This poem creates images in my head or a man with broken legs, trying to escape from this past by covering his ears with thick silver to block out the sound.Covering his eyes with butter so he can't see whats really happening, stuffing his nose with garlic to mask the horrible smell he can remember, getting the taste off his tongue buy guzzling down whisky.

Poetry Circles (:

GRENADIER

The Queen she sent to look for me,
The sergeant he did say,
`Young man, a soldier will you be
For thirteen pence a day?'

For thirteen pence a day did I
Take off the things I wore,
And I have marched to where I lie,
And I shall march no more.

My mouth is dry, my shirt is wet,
My blood runs all away,
So now I shall not die in debt
For thirteen pence a day.

To-morrow after new young men
The sergeant he must see,
For things will all be over then
Between the Queen and me.

And I shall have to bate my price,
For in the grave, they say,
Is neither knowledge nor device
Nor thirteen pence a day.

A. E. Housman

QUESTIONS
1: This poem makes me feel sad for the soldiers because they are only getting a very small amount of money to go away and fight.I don't feel that 13 pence is enough money for a life.
2:It is about the deal between a solider and the queen. Each solider receives 13 pence a day to fight in the war.It is about how the soldiers basically received nothing in return for their lives and the queen just made an offer so it may have persuaded them to fight.
3:My mouth is dry, my shirt is wet. These words describe how he feels before he dies. His mouth is dry and his shirt is wet with blood.
4:I think the poet is trying to tell the reader that the queen didn't give then a lot of credit for their duties as solders and gave them very little. It may also be saying how the soldiers were just used by the queen to fight for their nation, if the young boy didn't have much oney to begin with maybe 13 pence was a good pay for him and he felt that he had to accept.
5:For thirteen pence a day did I
Take off the things I wore,
And I have marched to where I lie,
And I shall march no more.
I chose this stanza because even though the soldiers weren't getting paid a lot, he still felt that it was his duty to fight. The solider did and he ended up dying for his country.
6:Yes it does rhyme
7:I think the rhyme in this poem adds to the overall effect because the words get stuck in my head. I think rhyme is a good way to make the reader think about the poetry more.
8: no I have not
9:Yes I did, because I thought it was a clever way to get the message across to the reader about how the queen didn't really seem to care about the soliders and that she just gave them as little as she could.
10:The imagery created from the poem is a dead boy , in a blood covered shirt who is looking back on his life and wondering is those 13 pence a day were really worth it.

gren⋅a⋅dier –noun (in the British army) a member of the first regiment of household infantry (Grenadier Guards).

World War Two

NOTES
-1939 to 1945
-Invlolved most of the worlds nations
-most widespread war in history
-most countries involved shared a united effort aimed at ending the aggression of the Axis Powers—Germany, Italy, and Japan
Events
March 13, 1938 Germany annexes Austria
October 7–10 Germany takes Czech region of Sudetenland
August 23, 1939 German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact
September 1 Germany invades Poland
September 3 Britain and France declare war on Germany
September 17 USSR invades Poland from the east
September 19 German and Soviet forces meet in central Poland
September 28 Warsaw falls to Germany
November 30 Soviet forces invade Finland

As this war involved so many nations I think most people would be devestated to see their friends and maybe families fight. It would have been very hard to deal with the fact that there was a war on and I think fear was very common.

War Poem

People turned against each other,
Children on the search for cover,
Why should man want to inflict such pain,
With bullets,grenades and acid rain,
People in trenches and behind barbed wire fences,
Soldiers run into deadly fire,
hoping that they can inspire,
New recruits to help them shoot through the bodies of their enemies,
A life for a life.

Year 10 English VISIONS OF WAR writing task

Today I have walked for miles. The Germans came and forced us out of our home. They did the same to all my neighbours as well. We were all lined up and told to walk. I can remember thinking about why they are doing this, I couldn't remember doing anything wrong. My parents told me to keep my head down and walk, there were people everywhere, some were holding guns and speaking a language I could not understand. Once every while I would hear a bang and the line would suddenly stop.We were pushed and told to keep going. I could see blood, there was blood all over the ground and nobody did anything about it.I closed my eyes ad the chains that bind ed us into a line guided me. Miles we walked, sunrise to sunset. We were weak.We were tired. We were unaware. My family and I were forced into this buliding, surrounded by barbed wire.People callopsing from a day of walking were shot dead.No emotion by the guards. It seems like anybody who even thought about escaping would be shot.I was terrified but I tried to look strong. We were shown to our bunk where my family and I shared with two others. This is where I am writing, it's the only time of day where we are not under close supervision of guards. I hope that anybody who finds this journal will be able to see just what we are going through.
