How are women represented in Kanye West’s ‘Gold Digger’?

The music video and lyrics to Kanye West’s ‘Gold Digger’ represents women in a very objective way. The music video shows numerous women in lingerie whilst Kanye himself is dressed in normal clothing. These girls are posing infront of magazine covers in flirtatious ways and covered in makeup. Now I ain't sayin' she a gold digger (When I'm in need)
But she ain't messin' wit no broke, broke (She steal me money)
The lyrics represent women as financially dependent on men and will go out and spend money on liposuction instead of insurance.
18 years, 18 years
She got one of yo' kids, got you for 18 years
I know somebody payin' child support for one of his kids
'Cause when she leave yo' ass she gon' leave with half
18 years, 18 years
And on her 18th birthday, he found out it wasn't his?
Again, these lyrics show women in a negative way. The lyrics are saying that us women sleep around and have children with numerous people. Marriage isn’t something we care about and we divorce our husbands for the child support money and half of the bank account. The child in the music video is dressed up as a devil. ‘The spawn of Satan’ is the meaning behind this, again, women are the negative in this scenario.
She walkin' around lookin' like Michael with ya money
These lyrics are about the amount of plastic surgery women get done in order to look attractive to the opposite sex. These lyrics suggest that our number one priority should be self maintenance and how we act in front of men. The girls that are getting all the attention are the ones half naked on magazine covers and this is how women are portrayed in the media. Anyone above this standard receive no mention, all you hear about are the women with the prettiest faces and richest husbands.
