As Romeo and Juliet progresses, the audience is positioned to see that in the Capulet household respect for the family elders is paramount.
A few examples of where the respect of elders in the Capulet house become paramount is where Juliet makes up her own mind about marriage and who she wants to be with. Mr and Mrs Capulet have already chosen Paris as a suitable husband and as soon as they think Juliet is ready to wed it will be to him. Although, Juliet goes behind her parents back with the help of the Nurse and marries Romeo instead. Another example would be when Romeo and his friends arrive at the Capulet party, Thybalt immediately wants to fight them as they are Montagues and when Mr Capulet tells him to leave it he does not listen. Questioning his authority and lack of respect shows that the Capulet household does not position their elders word above their own thoughts and beliefs.
